Upcoming Organizational Changes

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am writing to share several upcoming staffing changes at Shoreline Community College. As announced in the May 28, 2021 Board of Trustees meetings, I have been named as the Acting President beginning July 1, 2021. I will remain in this role until an Interim President is selected, at which time I will return to my position as Vice President for Student Learning, Equity & Success (VP-SLES).

In order to assist in this temporary transition in leadership, a number of staff changes have been identified to ensure ongoing support of the College’s goals. These changes will be made on (or close to) July 1, 2021 as outlined below.

  • Samira Pardanani will permanently shift to Associate Vice President for Student Services & International Education. Ms. Pardanani’s education and experience make her an ideal fit for this student services position. She has a strong background in general student services, in ESL instruction, academic and student service management, strategic enrollment management, and international marketing. She has a strong ability in leading high-functioning teams as demonstrated in her work of leading Shoreline’s IE department, considered to be a national leader among community colleges hosting international students. Ms. Pardanani will lead and supervise all areas of the College’s student support services, including supervision of Dean Derek Levy (Student Support Services) and Acting Dean Lisa Malik (Access & Advising). Ms. Pardanani also will make a small set of organizational changes within her international education team to manage her new role. Ms. Pardanani will report to me in my Acting President role and will report to the VP-SLES when I return to that permanent position.
  • Ann Garnsey-Harter will temporarily shift (for one year) to Associate Vice President for Academic Operations & Learning Resources. This temporary position has been created to support the significant administrative work necessary in the coming year to support a return to on-campus instruction and services. Dr. Garnsey-Harter consistently has demonstrated her capacity for major strategic and organizational planning that will be required for the College to navigate the complexity of our return. Behind Dr. Garnsey-Harter, Amy Rovner will step into the role of Acting Director of eLearning for one year. During 2021-22, Dr. Garnsey-Harter’s direct report areas will include the Associate Dean of the Library & Learning Resources, the Acting Director of eLearning, the Director of Classroom Support Services, Continuing Education and Rentals, and all academic operations. Dr. Garnsey-Harter will report to me in my Acting President role and will report to the VP-SLES when I return to my permanent role.
  • Guy Hamilton will temporarily assume the role of Acting Vice President for Student Learning. Dr. Hamilton has taken this role on in the past, and has significant experience in instructional management, contract management, facilities, and operations. He will remain in that position until an Interim President is selected and I return to my role as VP-SLES. Behind Dr. Hamilton, Crystal Hess will step into the role of Acting Executive Dean of STEM and Workforce until Dr. Hamilton returns to his Executive Dean role.

Acting Associate VP Garnsey-Harter, Acting VP Hamilton, and Associate VP Pardanani also will become members of Executive Team. All three individuals have continued to demonstrate deep commitment to Shoreline by stepping in to assume leadership roles when needed and have been at the College for many years. The full Executive Team will include Dawn Beck, Ann Garnsey-Harter, Guy Hamilton, Phillip King , Martha Lynn, Samira Pardanani, Gavin Smith, and Veronica Zura.

Financial implications from these position changes will be paid for within salary savings from existing transitions. These changes will not cost more, or add to the general fund budget, for the College.

There may be additional smaller changes as we navigate other transitions of staff (resignations and/or retirements).  We will keep the College abreast as those changes occur. Additionally, we will update the College’s organizational chart to reflect the above changes.

Sincerely,

Phillip J. King

Vice President, Student Learning, Equity & Success

On-Campus Classes Resume June 29

Dear colleagues,

With temperatures expected in the high 80s/low 90s tomorrow, all on-campus class meetings will resume as planned for Tuesday, June 29.

While the weather will still be hot, our facilities team has prepared our classrooms and buildings for occupancy. The air-conditioned PUB (Building 9000) will be open 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. for any on-campus students, residents, or employees who are in need of food, beverages, or an indoor waiting area.

As a reminder, if you plan to come to campus, please follow all current COVID-19 safety protocols for accessing campus, wearing masks, and social distancing. Additional information about vaccination requirements, curbside pickup/drop off service, and other resources is available on the COVID-19 web page

We appreciate your flexibility in dealing with this extraordinary weather event.

Sincerely,

Phillip J. King

Summer Pilot of Hybrid On-Campus Classes

Hello Shoreline students, faculty, and staff:

Summer instruction will begin on Monday, June 28, 2021. Given our region’s downward trend in COVID-19 infection rates and the success of King County vaccination efforts, the College is increasing its hybrid on-campus course offerings this summer.

As we gradually return to an in-person modality, safety continues to be our top priority. Students, faculty and staff should all be aware of the current COVID-19 protocols. Read the FAQs below for a reminder about the guidelines for on-campus presence.

How do I access campus?

  • If you are a student or visitor, you must submit a Campus Access form prior to arriving on campus. A new attestation is required each day. Upon arrival each day, students and visitors will be required to go to the check-in station in 2910.
  • If you are faculty or staff working remotely and need to access campus, you must submit a request to your supervisor who will contact the Executive Team for approval. Be sure to include the specific date, time duration, and reason in your request. Before coming to campus, be sure to fill out the Campus Access form prior to your arrival.
  • If you are faculty or staff with a regular on-campus assignment, you must submit the Campus Access form prior to coming to campus each day. You do not need to request approval to access campus.

What if I need to pick up or return materials to campus?

If you are only picking up or dropping off materials from your vehicle and not accessing any buildings or spaces on campus, you should use Shoreline’s Curbside Pickup/Drop-Off program, located in 2905. To access this service:

Executive Team approval is not required for an appointment, but make sure to notify the department from which the items will be borrowed before coming to campus.

What are the rules while on campus?

Mask wearing, social distancing, and cleaning practices continue for all on-campus activities. Hybrid class sizes have been adjusted to ensure appropriate social distancing and safety protocols. The College is following Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) guidelines regarding appropriate building air filtration.

Students must do the following when coming to campus:

  • Wear a mask at all times while indoors on campus, regardless of vaccination status
  • Mask wearing is not required while outdoors
  • Fill out a Campus Access Form to check in and out of campus each day
  • Stay home if you are feeling sick
  • Follow any specific class safety practices communicated at the start of the quarter

Employees coming to campus must continue to follow the practices described on the COVID-19 faculty/staff page

Do I need to be vaccinated?*

COVID-19 vaccinations are not currently required at Shoreline, but state higher education guidance could change in the future. The College strongly recommends all students and employees get a vaccine. Find a vaccine location near you

*Certain programs require students and faculty to be vaccinated. Students in these programs will have already been contacted.

What classes are on campus?

In addition to the limited set of professional & technical programs that have continuously been operating on campus throughout the pandemic, students can enroll in several different hybrid classes from a variety of programs and disciplines, including Biology, Drama, Human Development , Mathematics, and Physical Education. The full list can be found by searching the online class schedule and filtering for “Partly Online.”

What student services are on campus?

All student services will continue to operate remotely throughout Summer quarter. As we plan for a gradual return to on-campus services in the fall, we will do all that we can to ensure a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Certain areas in the Pagoda Union Building (PUB) will be open from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM Monday through Thursday. Mask wearing will be required except while eating. Social distancing will be required. Areas open to students include:

  • 2nd floor bathrooms (main floor)
  • Food area (main floor)
  • 2nd floor lobby (main floor)

The first and third floors of the PUB will remain closed.

Please reference the College’s COVID-19 Safety page COVID-19 Safety page for more detailed FAQs and the most up-to-date information about the College’s guidelines.

Thank you for your cooperation with the guidelines listed above. I am confident that by working together, our campus will continue to be a safe and productive environment for all.

Sincerely,

Phillip J. King
Vice President for Student Learning, Equity & Success
