Notice of Data Breach Related to State Auditor’s Office

Fellow employees, we were recently notified of a data breach that may impact state employees.

The Washington State Auditor’s Office, a separately elected official, informed us about a security incident involving a third-party software service vendor the SAO was using. The incident, which occurred last month, may have exposed the personal and financial information of about 1.6 million Washingtonians who filed unemployment claims in 2020. This includes many state employees. To be clear, this was not the result of any actions of anyone at the Employment Security Department. It was a third-party vendor that was working for the State Auditor. It does not make the impact any less important, but it is important to note this is not the result of any actions or inactions at ESD.

We are awaiting further details from the Auditor’s Office on the extent of the data breach and the information compromised, but wanted to share the latest information we have right now. We will keep you informed as we learn more about this situation.

Employees whose information may have been compromised will be notified directly by the State Auditor’s Office. The Office of Financial Management and SAO are both setting up websites to help ensure employees are apprised of any new developments and available resources. Both are expected to go live today. OFM site will be ofm.wa.gov/saodatabreach. The SAO site will be sao.wa.gov/breach2021. There will also be a SAO call center set up later this week for employees to get assistance and resources with these issues, we will make sure you have it as soon as it is available.

We know this is not good news and we plan to help SAO and help you, in any manner possible. While you patiently await contact from SAO regarding your personal risk, please do not contact the Employment Security Department. They are not responsible for this problem and are not the appropriate place to troubleshoot issues that arise from it.

We will be looking to our HR and payroll staff and using DAAG to keep you up to date on any related process changes or recommended actions. We know you are eager to get this taken care of, as are we.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

The Executive Team at Shoreline

Update on Shoreline’s Early Childhood Education Program

Based on the Board’s approval of the 2020-2021 budget, including faculty reductions, Shoreline has begun the process of sunsetting the Early Childhood Education program.  Starting in spring quarter 2021, the program will not be accepting new students. Courses that are part of the program will be offered in spring quarter, based on current student needs.

After spring 2021, there will be two primary options for Shoreline students to complete their Shoreline education degrees and certificates.  Shoreline will make every effort to ensure these options enable students to complete their certificates and/or degrees in the same amount of time, in the same modality (online), and for the same cost as originally planned.

  • The first teach-out option will be through Washington Online (WAOL).  With this option, students continue to attend Shoreline, have a Shoreline transcript, and enroll in Shoreline classes using their Shoreline Canvas accounts.  The online courses are taught by various faculty throughout the state and include students enrolled at different colleges.

  • The second will be through a teach-out agreement with another Washington community college.  There are several opportunities for partnering with other colleges on teach-out agreements, and preliminary conversations have begun. Expect an update on specific teach-out plans in mid-February.

Students currently enrolled in this program (as of winter 2021), will receive a more detailed email about these options and next steps by February 15, 2021. Each student will work with an advisor to develop their own teach-out plan. Those students who have previously been enrolled in the program within the last two years will also receive notification and options for degree completion. The Office of Student Learning is identifying how to allocate and enhance advising resources for these students. If you have questions about this process, please contact Brigid Nulty, Acting Associate Dean of Business, Communication Studies, and Social Sciences (bnulty@shoreline.edu).

Thank you for your patience as we undertake this process.

Sincerely,

Phillip King
Vice President for Student Learning, Equity, and Success

Message from the President: Sharing My Retirement Plans (June 30, 2022)

Dear Colleague,

After 41 rewarding years in higher education, (25 in community colleges), I am announcing my decision to retire. It is difficult to personalize an e-mail, but I want to say how privileged I have felt to serve the students, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and administrators at Shoreline Community College. The decision to retire was difficult with so many exciting projects ahead of us. However, given the need to begin refreshing our strategic plan, it seemed appropriate to be open and transparent that I will be retiring on June 30, 2022. This will allow the new president the opportunity to begin work as I did—engaging the campus and larger community in this important and focused work. We have much ahead of us with reopening the College, completing the capital campaign, continuing work on the major capital projects, implementing ctcLink, and all the student success initiatives supporting Guided Pathways. As always, I’m committed to moving these transformative efforts, forward.

Serving as a college president for over thirteen years has been the most enriching and inspiring experience of my career. It has allowed me to interact with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community leaders and learn how our community colleges make a difference to each individual we serve. I have seen how community college partners work together to improve lives, improve livelihoods, and give hope to those who may not have experienced it previously. The past six years as President of Shoreline has been an incredible and rewarding experience and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity.

I look forward to the work ahead of us!

With deep gratitude,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Announcing “Shoreline Shout-Outs” to Recognize Campus Teams

Shoreline Shout-outs are a new way to recognize departments or teams for their excellent work, projects, and accomplishments. This is separate and distinct from Waves of Gratitude, which are for recognizing work or achievements of an individual. Shoreline Shout-outs is for departments or teams and can be a way for team members to “shout-out” their team’s or another team’s accomplishments. This is one way for the whole campus to celebrate milestones for developments that may have otherwise only been known by the people in a specific division.

Has your department or another you’ve noticed been recognized for excellence in their field by the media, community or industry organizations? Shout that out. Has your division received or been awarded a new piece of equipment that will help Shoreline students better prepare for the workforce? Shout that out. What news can you share with the campus community that will add to their sense of pride in our institution and mission? Like Waves of Gratitude, Shoreline Shout-outs uses a submission form that is compiled by the Employee Recognition Committee and will be published thru Day at a Glance. Please join us in helping to recognize excellent teamwork that may otherwise go unnoticed campus-wide.

Submit a Shoreline Shout-Out.
