Precautions Regarding Measles Outbreak

As you may have heard in the news, two new cases of measles were confirmed at high schools in Bothell and Issaquah last week. The measles virus is extremely contagious, and can be dangerous, especially for young children. The virus can survive in a room for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. If exposed to the virus, anyone who is not immune is likely to get measles.

At this time, there have been no reported cases of measles at the College. However, as a general precaution, we are asking Shoreline students and employees to be aware of the symptoms and make sure you have received the vaccination.

  • If you have been exposed to measles and feel ill, stay home to help prevent the spread of the disease and contact your healthcare provider. If you don’t have a healthcare provider, call your local health department. If you need help getting access to health care, call the Family Health Hotline at 1-800-322-2588.
  • If you have not received a measles vaccination (part of the MMR vaccine), public health officials are encouraging you to do so now. Not only does a vaccination protect you, but it will also help protect those who are at highest risk of contracting the disease.
  • You can learn more about measles prevention via the WA Department of Health.

Thank you for your help in making sure our campus community stays healthy and safe!

Coordination around campus outreach events is one function of the Recruiters Roundtable group. Facilitated by Communications & Marketing, this team meets monthly to discuss outreach events among staff who are primarily focused on outward facing recruitment. This group has created a shared master Recruiting Events calendar, which all Shoreline staff are welcome to review at any time (instructions below). If you know of faculty/staff who are attending recruiting events out in the community or especially visiting high schools, please contact Amy Stapleton to coordinate plans. For questions on Recruiters Roundtable, contact Lori Maxfield.

How to view the Shared Calendar Resource for “Recruiting Events”
From your personal Outlook calendar left sidebar, right-click on “Other Calendars”, then “Add Calendar”, choose “From Address Book”. Select recruitingevents@shoreline.edu and OK. You can now view all other Recruiting Events that have been indicated by other recruiters across campus.  If you wish to join or learn more about an event, contact the event owner directly.

Dear Colleague,

We’ve received an update regarding Dr. Alison Stevens’ period of leave which has now been extended through the remainder of this academic year. Noting that Dr. Stevens is scheduled to retire in June 2019, please join me in thanking her for her service to the College and sending best wishes for a wonderful retirement.
