SIFF 2019 Opening Night and Film Scholarship Benefit Party + Volunteers needed

Please join The Foundation on Friday, May 24, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. for wine tasting, hors-d’oeuvres, a glass of wine, a meet-and-greet, and photo ops followed by the screening of our Opening Night film, Brittany Runs a Marathon, from 7:30 – 9:00 PM. This film was the Winner of the 2019 US Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival, directed by Paul Downs Colaizzo, starring Jillian Bell, Michaela Watkins, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Lil Rel Howery, and Micah Stock.

Tickets are $50 ($15 of the ticket price is tax deductible) and include wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, glass of wine, meet-and-greet, and the film. Proceeds benefit the Performing Arts and Digital Film-making Scholarship awarded to students each year by the Shoreline Community College Foundation.

Want to volunteer to work concessions at SIFF films?
Have fun serving popcorn and candy and get 2 free movie tickets! Seattle International Film Festival is coming to Shoreline for the fourth consecutive year this May 24th through June 2nd.

The Foundation is handling the concessions and needs volunteers to work one shift (about 4-5 hours) through the duration of the festival. As a thank you for your time, each volunteer will receive two vouchers to SIFF films good at Shoreline and any of the other SIFF locations.

Each volunteer will also need to arrive on time or early to receive orientation of use of the Ipad sales tool and popcorn popper.

Concessions shifts are generally noon to 5 p.m. and 5 to 10 p.m. on weekends and Memorial Day and from 5 to 10 p.m. on weeknights. If interested in volunteering, please sign up at volunteersignup.org/4L7PK.

Please do not sign up to volunteer during a film you would like to see as you won’t be able to go into the theater during your shift.

Concessions include popcorn, candy, and nonalcoholic drinks. The separate bar includes beer and wine. You must be at least 21 years of age with an ID to serve alcohol and not attending Shoreline Community College as a student.

ALL PROCEEDS GO TO THE PERFORMANCE ARTS AND DIGITAL FILM MAKING SCHOLARSHIP for our Shoreline students!

Message from Facilities Director Jason Francois: Update-Infrastructure Work on Road(s)

Dear Colleague,

I have some good news to report in regard to the east road closure. Forma Construction is a week ahead of schedule due to the fantastic weather we’ve experienced.

What this means to the community is that we will reopen the paved parking in the 2900 staff lot, along with the spaces under the overhang of 3000, on Thursday, May 16th.

Between six and eight of the gravel parking spaces on the east side of the road will reopen as well.

The gravel parking spaces that face the 2900 building, however, will need to remain closed. The trench passes directly behind these, and will still be deep enough to be an issue for vehicle safety.  (The trench will be filled or covered fully at the lot entrance and exit.)

The road between 5000 and the north end of 3000 will remain closed, so parking in 2900 will need to be accessed by driving around the west side of campus, past the dog park and Automotive.

Work in the trench will progress south towards the 5000 building. The zig-zag method used to avoid utilities is not needed in this area, so one lane and the parking lot will remain open as planned. Flaggers provided by Forma will be in place during work hours, expected to be 6:30 am to 3 pm.

Final end date for the project is still June 28th. See the Road Closures Diagram for more info.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Jason Francois

Message from President Roberts: First Amendment Rights & the Courtyard

Dear Colleague,

The weather is warming up which often means individuals will come on campus to exercise their First Amendment Right of Expression. On Monday, May 13, we had such an individual who was verbalizing his views in the College’s Courtyard. I understand that some students and employees may have encountered this individual and may have an array of emotions and feelings. It is important to know that the College has its own clear Community Standard statement that does not align with the individual’s point of view.

The College can also take action in accordance with our policies and procedures. This means that if a person’s behavior disrupts the teaching, learning, and/or business operations of the College, or threatens someone’s physical safety, a response team from Safety & Security and Executive Team will organize and respond to the situation accordingly.

If anyone on campus takes an action that makes you or your students feel harassed, discriminated against, or threatened, you are encouraged to respond in one of two ways:

  • If you are concerned for anyone’s physical safety, contact Safety & Security at 206-546-4633 (or 911 if it’s an emergency)
  • If you witness or know of any incident that goes against our Community Standard, please report it to the Community Standard email address (communitystandard@shoreline.edu)to initiate an investigation and response

If you know of anyone, especially students, who were affected by the incident on Monday and may still be in need of support, please refer them to the Counseling Center for support (206-546-4594, FOSS Building 5000, Room 5245). And if you are personally feeling distressed and in need of any support, please make sure to access our Employee Assistance Program (877-313-4455).

Based on prior experience, we know this may not be the last time we see such an incident on campus, so I hope this information provides reassurance that the College has a response plan in place for situations like this, and that there are steps you can take to report and share information. The more we understand what’s happening on campus, the better we can respond with a collective action that helps us live into the values of our Community Standard, while ensuring we uphold First Amendment rights, as required by law.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

President
