Message from President Roberts: Enrollment and Budget Update

Dear Colleague,

As I shared in my fall communication to employees, after two academic years of solid domestic enrollment growth, the College experienced a decline in spring and summer that continues this fall quarter. Now that tenth-day numbers are in, we know that our domestic enrollment is down by 7% compared to last fall. I’d like to give you some information about what actions we, as a College, are taking to address this trend.

While we know there are some external forces beyond our control that affect enrollment, such as high employment in the Seattle area and difficulties with our international students securing visas, the College is making plans to ensure we are headed in a direction to grow and retain our student enrollment.

The Executive Team is working with deans, directors, and other College staff, as well as our faculty, to gather information and examine the root causes of our recent drop in enrollment, rather than simply addressing symptoms. Once we’ve completed some deeper analysis, our next steps will be shared at our Fall Campus Update on November 30. Please plan to attend to learn more.

In the meantime, know that the Board of Trustees has approved our operating budget for the year at the same level as last year. This week, departments will see this year’s budget information loaded into FMS Query. As always, even though amounts have been budgeted, we need to be intentional with our spending and focus on expenditures that support our strategic goals and help students succeed.

In the coming weeks, I’ll also share some additional enrollment and budget information in Day-At-A-Glance (DAAG), so please watch for those messages.

There is so much we can do to address this situation, and we’ve had recent successes when we pull together. We know when we collectively work together to solve challenges, good things happen for our students, and thus for the College.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

President

Virtual Campus, Instructional Media, and Plus 50 Name Changes

The College is moving away from the term “Virtual Campus” in favor of “Online Learning.” Executive Director, Ann Garnsey-Harter, explains, “Using the term ‘virtual’ to refer to online learning can be confusing for students as it now can bring to mind virtual reality and augmented reality.” The name of the department that provides support for online students and faculty will remain “eLearning Services.”

The department that produces instructional videos, as well as assists students and faculty in using classroom technology systems, will be renamed from “Instructional Media” to “Classroom Support Services.” That department’s duties will expand to become a one-stop shop for faculty and student needs within the physical classrooms.  Randy Gottfried’s title will change to Director for Classroom Support Services.

Finally, the College’s non-credit educational offerings are now housed in this same division and the program offerings will be rebranded from “Plus 50” or “Bridges to Shoreline” to “Continuing Education.”  The Global Affairs Center (GAC) will reside within Continuing Education and a new Program Specialist 2, Kailey Wolf, has been hired to coordinate a college-wide events series, which will include GAC events.

The Division now will be known as eLearning, Classroom Support, & Continuing Education, with Garnsey-Harter serving as its Executive Director.

Get ready for the Great Washington Shakeout Thurs., Oct. 18

Dear Colleagues,

The annual October event, The Great ShakeOut, has become part of the Shoreline Community College culture with staff, faculty, and students participating annually. This year’s shakeout event is on Thurs., Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m.

The ShakeOut has been an excellent awareness tool for encouraging all departments on our campus to prepare for emergencies and disasters. This year, areas of the U.S. were severely impacted by hurricanes and wildfires, and our Pacific Northwest region can also be potentially impacted by a different natural hazard threat: earthquakes. So please remember to Drop, Cover, & Hold On.

This year Shoreline Community College will be participating in this worldwide earthquake preparedness awareness effort by testing a classroom alert notification system called LYNX. All smart classrooms on campus have a LYNX software program enabled and located on the instructor’s main computer. The LYNX system will allow Shoreline Emergency Management team members to send an alert communication inside the classrooms via projection screen. Once the LYNX message has been received, instructors can easily clear out of the screen by pressing the escape button. If you are interested in how LYNX alert system works, please view the LYNX training video posted on CANVAS.

When:
The ShakeOut for this year is scheduled for October 18, 2018 at 10:18 a.m. Everyone on campus is encouraged to participate.

What to Do:
At Shoreline, college officials suggest three things to get ready for the Great Washington Shakeout drill:

#1. Read the plan
– Go to http://www.shoreline.edu/safetyandsecurity/emergency-preparedness.aspx to see Shoreline’s emergency preparedness information and the Emergency Management Response plan.
– Go to  https://www.shakeout.org/washington/

#2. Make sure you that you are signed up to receive the campus RAVE ALERT messages
– Go to https://www.shoreline.edu/Connect to add phone numbers and additional email accounts to your message preferences

#3. Do the drill on Oct. 18th at 10:18 a.m.
If it is appropriate for where you are:
DROP to the ground
– Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table
HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops

In addition, demonstrations of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) and Stryker evacuation chairs will take place from 11:00 a.m-12:30 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 18th, in the main lobby of 9000 Building.

Remember, the LYNX message will only be a test.

Edwin Lucero
