Faculty New Hires

Dear Shoreline Faculty and Staff,

We are writing today with an update about our annual request process for full-time faculty tenure lines. In early October every year, we update each academic unit so that they will have an opportunity to submit proposals for full-time faculty positions. In late November we indicated the number of lines we believe we can fill, and at that time the College shared we could most likely fill 10 full-time faculty lines. The deans presented the requests in early December within a process where each of the deans and Faculty Program Coordinators (FPCs) are able to provide ratings related to the requests. There were a total of twenty-one (21) full-time faculty tenure-line requests.

The team met and prioritized fifteen (15) requests, assuming that there would be at least ten (10) available for hire and possibly more. The Executive Team (ET) approved ten (10) positions to go forward.  The deans and FPCs are in the middle of determining the specific disciplines that will be brought in for permanent and pro-rata positions.

As we know, having additional faculty to support our academic programs and create new opportunities for our students is critical for the College. With the current state of our budget (rapid decline of enrollment including this current quarter), the Executive Team (ET) determined a longer-term plan is needed to bring back all seventeen (17) additional faculty. As we move into the next couple quarters, we will assertively engage in enrollment growth activities and continue to monitor enrollment trends. If enrollment begins to move in a positive direction aligned with the budget outlook, we will revisit faculty prioritizations to consider bringing hiring on a mid-year cycle and will also certainly examine doing so in the next cycle (2024-2025). We, of course, are disappointed about not replacing to the maximum amount to fulfill our fiduciary responsibilities. That said, we are very excited about moving forward with these first ten (10) positions as we recognize this brings us closer to closing personnel gaps among the faculty ranks.

As we prepare the 2023-2024 budget, we will be working with campus partners (including the Strategic Planning Budget Council) to identify additional mechanisms that are necessary to ensure we bring a balanced budget to the Board of Trustees. We will continue to keep the campus apprised of this as we move forward.

We would like to call out one particular and important request for this College. There have been many conversations locally and across the state about the importance of developing robust Ethnic Studies programs as an important foundation to support institutional DEI goals. In our experience, coming from colleges with large Ethnic Studies programs, we can tell you how much these programs genuinely transform the lives of students and provide new learning opportunities as well as access and belonging opportunities in a unique and crucial way.

Therefore, in the spirit of the developing DEI strategic plan, president’s goals, and commitment to DEI, the Executive Team (ET) will be supporting a FT position in Ethnic Studies in the next round (next fiscal year 2024-2025) of hires. For this year (2023-2024), this program (Multicultural Services) will receive a pro-rata position to develop curriculum, and work with campus leaders to develop support from the greater community and lay the groundwork for success in this crucial area for community colleges and for Shoreline.

From VP-DEI Melanie Dixon

Dear Campus Community,

Firstly, I want to start by thanking you for the warm welcome as I transition into the college and my new role to engage in DEI efforts alongside all of you. It has been refreshing to meet so many in the community who are full of innovative ideas and eager to engage.

Today marks my 14th day at the college and I’ve learned a lot about the rich history of this campus community. The history reflects the commitment to DEI, and I am appreciative of all those responsible for laying a foundation for us to build upon. There is much still left to accomplish in this space to achieve our commitment to equity and inclusion. As an individual who believes wholeheartedly in co-creation, I am confident that together we can identify barriers to inclusion and dismantle them together. I also have no doubt that collectively we can address equity gaps that undermine academic and professional success. Recognizing the importance of a name and preferred pronouns or understanding the implications of power structures will require intentionality and mindfulness. I am eager to make certain all members of the community are seen, heard, and valued. I come to you with humility, compassion and always extending grace.

I value transparency and effective communication to make sure everyone is involved in DEI efforts. My responsibilities are at the system level and thus my work will touch all areas of the college. That said, I think it’s important for the community to be aware of individuals and areas pertaining to the important work of DEI.

New Faculty Institute

Dear Shoreline Faculty,

I am writing this message as outcome of our work this past fall with the Shoreline New Faculty Institute (NFI).  Many thanks to Dawn Lowe-Wincentsen and the new faculty that were so engaged.  I sincerely the thoughtful conversations and work together. In Fall 2022 we had 17 new full-time tenure track faculty, plus two second-year faculty joined the first new faculty institute. The group met weekly in a hybrid modality to discuss a range of topics from specific activities at Shoreline (Guided pathways, Learning Outcomes, ARCs, etc. ) and Pedagogy information (including labor-based grading and TILT). There was a canvas site built using the faculty onboarding course Crystal Hess designed in 2021, and much of the eLearning resources available in Canvas. Faculty will continue to have access to the canvas site and these resources.

Throughout the quarter we asked for feedback and attempted to adapt to the new faculty needs as it was possible. At the end of the quarter, we received extensive feedback and a follow-up meeting with two of the participants. Based on this feedback we have moved to three sessions for winter. The topics were requested during this feedback process. It was also requested to make attendance optional. That has been clearly stated in all communications with the participants. All sessions have been communicated to the participants via canvas and email.

Here are the sessions for Winter Quarter:

  • 1/20, 12-1:30 Pho with friends. This will be our kickoff session for the winter quarter. We will discuss the NFI expectations, how to participate, and what the thoughts are for the next year based on the input you all have shared. I will find a place on campus (1727) and get some Pho and sandwiches delivered in.  We have 9 RSVPs for this session. Food will be ordered the afternoon of 1/19.
  • 2/3, 9-11am ARC goals and report drafting. Mentors invited! We will look at some samples of 1st year ARC long reports and start drafting your own documents. While the main reports are done by the ARC chair and administrators, you will have goals and an updated CV to work on. I will try to get us a computer lab for this session (1308 is scheduled). And we will get some coffee and breakfast brain food in. (nuts, fruit, egg bites…)  This session will be hybrid. Sample documents will be added to canvas.
  • 2/27 3-4pm DEI and Meet Melanie Dixon. Melanie Dixon is the new VP of DEI for the college. I will invite her to our last session of winter to talk about DEI vision and plans at the college. This session will be held via zoom as requested by faculty participants.

Continued feedback is appreciated. There will be additional activities in the spring quarter, and we are planning on offering a new faculty institute again next Fall. The feedback received will help us improve the institute for the next group.

Sincerely,

Phillip J. King, Ed.D.

Vice President for Student Learning, Equity, and Success
