EVENTS AND NEWS

Good afternoon all- hope your week is off to a great start. I wanted to thank everyone who came out to the challenges and accomplishments meeting last week. It was great to see so many people on ZOOM engaged with the community. There were a couple questions in CHAT from that meeting which I will post at the end of this message. I also did my monthly video update this week- if you haven’t seen it – you can see it here

I also want to thank VP Melanie Dixon & Aisha Hauser for taking us through a healing space this week with a specific focus on the impact of the horrible brutality that Tyre Nichols recently suffered. We also discussed gaps at this institution that need to be addressed to do DEI work. There will be additional healing spaces in the near future if you were unable to join.

In addition, this week I had a great meeting with Guru Dorje who works through King County as an Administrator/Director CECO programming here at Shoreline. Guru has a wonderful vision and I expect to continue to learn from him and work with Dean John Molinaro and others on great projects to serve the community!

ET is continuing our intercultural communication training this week and specifically focused on onboarding our new colleague as VP of DEI. The two-hour training was helpful as we thought through how we would work together and prioritize DEI work across the college, not in silos.

I hope you all are well. Next week I am off to DC to continue to advocate for staff and faculty and legislation that supports our system. I will fill you in when I return. Thanks for all you do.

Full-Time Faculty Positions, 2023-24

Dear Shoreline Faculty,

I am writing as a follow up to our email from last week regarding full-time faculty hiring for the 2023-24 year.  Our message from last week was about the process and the overall number that we could hire.  The intent of this email is to clarify the areas of hiring and a little more information about our ethnic studies path.

  • The following areas will post for full-time faculty tenure lines, with anticipated start date in Fall 2023:  Nursing 1, Nursing 2, Automotive-General Service Technician, Biotech/Biology, Dental Hygiene 1, Medical Lab Technology (MLT), Music, Economics, Automotive-Toyota, and Supply Chain Management.
  • The following areas will post for an 80% pro-rata faculty position: Nursing 3 and Dental Hygiene 2.
  • The College will be filling an annual contract full-time faculty member in Ethnic Studies. In last week’s message, we had indicated this area would receive a pro-rata position. However, as we considered the body of work needed to develop curriculum, test a variety of pathways, redevelop partnerships, build a program marketing plan, and assure sustainability – the College believes that a providing a 100% annual contract for this area is necessary. We will begin some of this development work as early as this spring 2023 quarter.

Lastly, we continue to monitor enrollment and our budget such that, if resources become available, we may be able to provide more full-time tenure opportunities for Shoreline.  The FPCs have discussed this in our monthly meetings and we will coordinate with the deans as we monitor student scheduling needs in AY24.

Please contact Dr. Kahn, AVP Lucas Rucks, or me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Phillip J. King, Ed.D.

From Strategic Planning & Budget Council Chair Sarah Swanberg: Be a part of something huge…the Strategic Plan Task Force

Dear Shoreline Community College Colleagues:

I am writing as this year’s Chair of the Strategic Planning and Budget Council to let you know that you have a chance to be part of something HUGE!  Shoreline is embarking on a journey to develop our Strategic Plan for the next 5-10 years, and for this to be a success, we need our college community to be a part of the process.  To move the project forward and advise and guide the development of the Strategic Plan, a Strategic Plan Task Force is being created.

We are seeking people with various expertise, experience, networks, and unique perspectives to sit on the Task Force for the duration of the project, roughly from February through October.  This includes both part-time and full-time faculty, represented and classified staff, students, and community members.  (Part-time faculty would be paid for their work).

Task Force members will be asked to attend a total of six meetings, attend the Equity Visioning and Strategic Planning Charrette (Workshop) as well as participate in workgroups that will directly draft the plan’s goals, objectives and actions.  Our consultant team MIG will be leading us through the process.

If you would like to be a part of this exciting endeavor, please send an email of interest (or any questions) to Sarah Swanberg at sswanberg@shoreline.edu by February 8th, 2023.

Sincerely,

Sarah Swanberg
