Full Campus Power Shutdown on Sat, September 11

While a full campus power shutdown was previously announced for August 21, it did not occur due to a scheduling change with Seattle City Light. Please be advised all campus power will shut down this Saturday for approximately 8 hours.

Note: Care should be taken to remove or dispose of any perishable food stored in campus breakroom refrigerators.

Full Power Shutdown of the Entire Campus

Date & Duration:

Saturday, 9-11-21, 7 AM to 3 PM, 8 hours.

Areas Affected:

All power to the entire Shoreline Community College Campus. The work will be performed in the Building #9000 Electrical Room adjacent to Mail Room. Seattle City Light will be accessing their electrical vault in the East access road.

Purpose/Scope:

To perform required maintenance work on the electrical switch gear in Building #9000. This will allow electricians to safely perform smaller localized shutdowns for the HSAMCC project and other future projects on campus. It will also help mitigate campus electrical outages or electrical gear failures in future. Eaton will be cleaning and testing the switch gear in building #9000.

Thank you.

2021-22 State & Federal Work Study Update

Dear Shoreline Faculty and Staff,

As part of our continuing effort to return to campus, I am pleased to announce that we are also re-launching the State and Federal Work Study (FWS) program for on-campus services.  The option to hire a work study student is open to all departments.  You will need to determine the kind of employment opportunity you can offer eligible students and how your department can benefit from hiring work studies.  Here are some important considerations you must keep in mind:

  • There is a clear expectation that supervisors or unit permanent staff must be present when work study are on-campus
  • A work study position should not be used in lieu of permanent staff
  • A work study position should not result in the displacement of regular employees
  • Work study wages are paid out of the college’s Federal and State work study budgets
  • Work studies must be paid for every hour they work
  • Work studies cannot do volunteer work at their place of employment
  • Students must be paid on an hourly basis that is comparable to entry level rate of regular employees performing similar duties as determined by HR
  • Figure out how the position will benefit your work study’s educational and career interest
  • Figure out what your department’s needs are and define the work you need performed and submit a job description to the work study program specialist for approval
  • Determine who in your department will manage the hiring, training, and supervision of your work study
  • Determine how you will train, manage, and supervise your work study remotely
  • Work studies who are not meeting the department’s job performance expectations (not completing their assigned job duties, a record of poor attendance, etc.) can be terminated
  • Students may have the option to find other work study placement if their current job does not work out
  • The Financial Aid Office and the Human Resources Office are here to assist

Remote Work (if applicable) in the SWS program continues to be allowable in 2021-22, if SWS student employees continue to be able to perform their necessary job functions remotely and that they have as much remote supervision as possible. This means having a reasonable and regular level of direct communication with their supervisor around daily tasks, production expectations, dealing with questions or problems that may have come up while they are working remotely, etc. Institutions must communicate these supervisory expectations on remote work to affected students, supervisors, and employers.

Shoreline Community College’s Work Study web page and U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid website provides answers to most frequently asked questions or contact our Financial Aid Office at FinancialAid@shoreline.edu

Fall Employee & Student Vaccination Requirements, Timelines

The following message was sent to all employees on September 3. Vaccination requirements for students were also sent to current and prospective students on this date. Read the student message.

Dear Colleagues,

As previously shared  in the August 18, 2021 message to campus staff and faculty, under Governor Inslee’s Proclamation 21-14.1 a vaccination requirement was put in place prohibiting College employees from engaging in work after October 18, 2021 if the employee has not been fully vaccinated (or determined to have an authorized vaccine exemption) against COVID-19.  More information regarding the specifics of the vaccine mandate can be found on the College’s COVID-19 Updates for Faculty & Staff webpage.

How does this proclamation impact me?

Based on the mandate, all employees (including student employees), volunteers working on campus, and contractors with the College have until October 18 to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment.  Please note individuals not able to comply with the vaccine requirement (or approved exemption) will not have employment with Shoreline after October 18, 2021.

Where can I get the vaccine?

Shoreline Community College, in partnership with the Shoreline Fire Department, is offering a series of pop-up COVID-19 vaccine clinics on campus on Mondays, Wednesdays (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) and Fridays (9 a.m. – noon) through October 8, 2021. The clinics are open to students, employees, and members of the public who have not been vaccinated or those who are immunocompromised seeking a booster shot. Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines will be available. Sign up for an appointment.

Where do I complete the Vaccination Attestation?

Fill out the online attestation form regarding your vaccination status. HR will post opportunities via zoom or in person to provide proof of vaccination status by visual inspection of your vaccination card or documents shortly. Stay tuned!

What are the dates for vaccination that meet the October 18 deadline?

  • Pfizer – First dose no later than 9/13/21, second dose no later than 10/4/21
  • Moderna – First dose no later than 9/6/21, second dose no later than 10/4/21
  • Johnson & Johnson – Single dose no later than 10/4/21

Which documents are needed to provide proof of vaccination?

Please be ready to show photo identification and proof of vaccination:

  • CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Card or photo of the card; or
  • Documentation of vaccination from a health care provider or electronic health card; or
  • State immunization information record; or
  • Employees vaccinated outside the U.S. may show a reasonable equivalent of these documents

Please note, at this time the College is not required to, nor does it plan to keep copies of vaccination documents.

How to I request a medical or religious exemption to the vaccination requirement?

  • Please keep in mind that medical/religious vaccination exemptions and accommodations related to on-campus work requirements are two separate things.  If a vaccination exemption is approved, you will engage in an interactive process with Human Resources regarding potential reasonable accommodations for you to perform the essential functions of your job.

I’m vaccinated but still need to request an accommodation to on-campus work requirements. What do I do?

Contact HR at scchr@shoreline.edu to begin the interactive dialogue related to your accommodation request.

I have other questions not already answer above.

Contact HR at scchr@shoreline.edu, and/or your supervisor with any additional questions.

Thank you!

Veronica Zura
Executive Director of Human Resources
