Join the Change Management Book Club – 5-minute edition

As a reminder, the Change Management Book Club is still going strong. We are currently finishing up our first book, “Employee’s Guide to Change” by Jeffrey M. Hiatt via Zoom and want to give EVERYBODY a chance to participate.

What if I don’t have the book?
No worries. Email us at ctcLink@shoreline.edu and we can send you a quick summary that will have you up to speed in 5 minutes.

Is this different than the previous Change Management Book Club?
Nope. It is the same opportunity to discuss what you found interesting and how it may apply to your life or your work. We just want to give everyone a chance to join in if they didn’t have a chance previously.

When is it?

Choose from one of three sessions:

    • Thursday, 5/21 2-3pm
    • Wednesday, 6/3 11am-12pm
    • Thursday 6/4, 3-4pm

How do I sign up?
If you need an invite, email us and let us know which session you wish to attend.

Any other questions?

If you have any questions, please contact Joe Chiappa, ctcLink Organizational Change and Project Manager.

New Waves of Gratitude submissions

• A wave of gratitude to Jeff Kashiwa! Thank you Jeff for a spectacular Live Unmuted Café performance. I am grateful for your openness to be our first performer and to share your extraordinary talent to uplift your community spirit!

• A wave of gratitude from Kyle Winslow to Ailsa Kellam! I would like to thank Ailsa Kellam for her tireless work to develop the first new AAAS degree in many years at Shoreline. Ailsa worked with industry partners, subject matter experts, and stakeholders across campus to create a Business Intelligence and Data Analytics degree. She spent hundreds of hours doing research and creating outcomes for this degree that will bring students family-wage jobs. We hope to get the degree approved by the Curriculum Committee on May 21. It has been a joy to work with Ailsa on this project.

* A wave of gratitude from Pilar Corder to Ted Johnson! Thank you Ted for being willing to share your gifts with us during the “Unmuting the Mic” series! It is but just a moment in taking a break but one that I know many were blessed by!

• A wave of gratitude from Jenna Durney to Tigist Stanghor! After Spring Quarter start, Opportunity Grant had money left over to help pay tuition for students. Even though it was extra work, Tigist expertly processed these awards. We were able to spend an additional $30,000 on tuition for students. Despite the challenges that come with being remote she did this quickly. I am so appreciative to have Tigist on the Workforce Team. Her knowledge and skill are so valued. Thank you Tigist!

• A wave of gratitude from Jenna Durney to Kirsten Nelson! After Spring Quarter started, Opportunity Grant still had extra money to help pay for students’ tuition. Over the past few weeks, I was able to pay for tuition for 17 new Opportunity Grant students. I know processing financial aid adjustments and reimbursement is a huge process and extra work, especially for so many students after the quarter starts. I want to say a huge thank you for all the work that you did to help these students.

*A wave of gratitude from Pilar Corder to Dave Bristow! Even though we couldn’t see your beautiful piano playing live it was definitely a great experience to see your gifts and talents. Thank you!

REMINDER: Accreditation Training available

All employees are invited to take part in a five-part training about accreditation that will prepare us for the Year 7 visit November 2 – 4. Over the course of the training, you will gain some understanding of the accreditation process and the content of Shoreline’s comprehensive self-study. The training will also provide you an opportunity to contribute to the self-study report itself.

The first three (of five total) modules are available now, with the next module to be released late next week. This training has been approved for classified staff to take part in during the closure.

You can self-enroll in the course.

If you have questions about the training or accreditation, please contact Bayta Maring (bmaring@shoreline.edu).

Request embedded eLearning support in your Canvas class: eLearning resources for faculty

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

We have heard that some faculty are getting eLearning-related questions from students. You always can send students to eLearning Services at eLearning@shoreline.edu and 24/7 Canvas Support. If you want more direct eLearning help for students, you now can request an eLearning Services staff member be embedded into your Canvas class.

eLearning Services then will add a discussion into your Canvas class, for example: “Ask Hoshimi eLearning Questions.”  Our eLearning staff member will respond to questions in that discussion within 24 hours.

The embedded eLearning support staff member will abide by guiding principles for student success support.

If you are interested, please email elearning@shoreline.edu with:

    1. Written confirmation that you would like an embedded eLearning staff member added to your Canvas class with student access privileges
    2. Class name and number
    3. Class item #
    4. Quarter

Thanks,
Ann Garnsey-Harter, Ph.D.

Updates to our 2020-21 budget development process & survey

Dear Colleague,

Thank you to those who were able to attend today’s zoom hall meeting about where we are in the 2020-21 budget process. Here is a recap of the information we covered (we’ll also share the video recording as soon as it’s available).

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Washington state is experiencing significant economic losses that will likely result in a $7-10 billion budget shortfall. In these challenging times, this means that we as a College, like all community and technical colleges in our system, must prepare for reduced state funding in 2020-21. For Shoreline, our most reliable scenario regarding reductions in the state allocation may be up to $7.3 million.

As such, we will need to look for additional ways to reduce our expenses, become more efficient in our operations, and enhance revenue where possible. This is a heavy lift that will take all of our good thinking to accomplish.

To manage this difficult budget situation, there are several steps in the remainder of this academic year to help us prepare for an adjusted budgetThis may feel like a very fast timeline, but it sets us up to receive input from all employees before we conclude the quarter. (You can also see a detailed timeline on the home page of the Budget Sharepoint site, where all related budget documentation will be stored).

May-June 2020

  • Employees will have opportunities over the next several weeks to share budget proposals and ideas for ET to consider (see survey information below)
  • Executive Team (ET), deans, and executive directors will also begin to work on budget proposals
  • Employee and ET proposals will be synthesized and presented at the June Board of Trustees meeting
  • The College will request the Board of Trustees to approve a continuing budget resolution at their June meeting

June-September 2020

  • ET may need to make budget reductions in June and throughout the summer based on the economic forecast or legislative action taken based on pandemic-related directives we may receive from the state
  • Any necessary changes will also be guided by the Governor’s or legislature’s directives for reducing or freezing costs

October 2020

  • Employees will be updated in early October about any changes to the proposals
  • The Board of Trustees will vote to adopt the 2020-21 budget at their October 28 meeting

Complete the Budget Proposal Survey by May 31

  • Please consider providing input for reducing expenses, creating efficiencies in our operations, and/or enhancing revenue. The survey is open now through May 31.

This work presents a new challenge for us to overcome together, and I’m very grateful for your perseverance and continued flexibility during an unsettled time. We could not have imagined working and learning remotely as we started this academic year and I thank you for your inspiration, courage, and kindness as we traverse together this new landscape created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you have any questions about the budget or this process, please submit them to the online budget question box.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

President
