CAMPUS UPDATES 12/08/22

EVENTS AND NEWS

Good afternoon all,

Hope you have been having a great week.  This past week has been one of meeting new colleagues on my end.  I’m sure you know by now, but we have Holly Woodmansee and William (Bill) Saraceno helping us as leadership in the Business and Admin area.  Both have extensive experience in the community and technical college system, have worked at Shoreline, and want to see us succeed!  Holly will be here two days a week in-person so if you get a chance to pop by the admin building, please do so.

More good news- we started the process to “get the band back together” in Communication & Marketing and have been meeting to move the first position forward- the Executive Director.  We hope to start interviews in early January!  Wish us luck!

I also had the monthly WACTC Presidents Academy and meetings last week (on Zoom), which as usual, were very informative.  I am beginning to know folks better which is nice and even getting teased “you are not new anymore so now you are voluntold, etc.”, which is fun as well.

I had a GREAT meeting yesterday with Lynwood City Council member Julieta Altamirano-Crosby. I met Julieta at the Seattle Latino film festival here on campus.  She has a wonderful and powerful story to share about her experiences moving to the state from Mexico and her experiences here which have really solidified her advocacy for the Hispanic/Latinx community.  We had great discussions about reaching immigrant families and folks who currently are not yet here at Shoreline and how we can partner with our local faculty and staff and others in the community to change that.  I will keep you posted as things develop but it was very inspirational.

Finally, as part of strengthening some ties in the community to support campus safety, I met with the City of Shoreline Chief of Police Kelly Park & Greg Cranson, our Director of Safety & Security. There were many topics discussed including community engagement, community support and safety, additional professional development, and collaborating with our local teams toward Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals.  This is going to be a great partnership with a lot of support for SCC!

Have a great week all,

Jack

Do you have a grant? Do you have any ideas for a new grant? The Grants Office is working to consolidate information about all grants on campus, including current awards, proposals in progress, and ideas for new projects. We can help with all stages, from proposal development to award tracking and reporting.  Please let us know at grants@shoreline.edu.

Shoreline Community College MISSION – Our Purpose

We serve the educational, workforce, and cultural needs of our diverse students and communities.

Statement from Shoreline Community College

Dear Campus Community,

Shoreline CC has recently came to an agreement with the AFT, as described below. The statement below is on behalf of Shoreline Community College. We apologize for the miscommunication earlier today, where it may have appeared as a joint statement.

Shoreline Community College (Shoreline) and our American Federation of Teachers (AFT) faculty union have recently come to a settlement agreement that will provide a lump sum payment to Shoreline faculty members, as specified by AFT, bringing closure to a contract dispute dating back to 2017.

By design, the faculty union is organized to advocate for better wages, benefits, and working conditions for faculty members. This means that the college and the AFT will occasionally be at odds with each other despite our shared goal of providing Shoreline students with the best educational experience possible.

Shoreline values its faculty and is committed to a partnership with AFT to ensure faculty members are fairly and appropriately compensated for their work. While the college is steadfast that it properly interpreted and applied the 2017-2019 Collective Bargaining Agreement, AFT has been equally steadfast in maintaining that the college’s calculations were not done as intended. The parties worked cooperatively to obtain a compromise solution to this dispute to settle the matter and move forward together.

At Shoreline, we believe in a spirit of intellectual honesty, free speech, and fostering an environment where our faculty, staff and students are welcome to disagree and challenge each other. We are pleased to have resolved this matter and look forward to the continued partnership with our faculty and AFT into the future.

We took feedback from our campus community and made a video version of campus updates. This is in addition to the weekly all-staff email and delivers content in a different way to those who may prefer watching a video over reading an email. Video updates will be created with informational and operational topics and even special guests!
