Don’t Miss These DEI Workshops – April 2, 9, 16

Hello All,

As part of the ongoing commitment at Shoreline Community College to creating an atmosphere built on mutual respect, trust, and mutual learning, Aisha Hauser (learn more about Ms. Hauser here) will be offering a series of webinars that will serve as building blocks for the Day of Learning.  Below are the descriptions of the webinars. These workshops are the same sessions that have been offered as professional learning for Admin Team and Classified Supervisors. The goal is to provide foundational experiences that help lays the groundwork for the new Executive Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion to build on with the campus community.

Ms. Hauser will have office hours on Fridays from 3pm-4:30pm and you are invited to schedule a 30 minute coaching session with Aisha to ask questions, or practice any of these skills.

The webinars will be recorded and for those who choose to participate live, there will be small group discussion opportunities.

The series begins with a workshop offered on Friday, April 2nd 2pm-3:30pm – How to Have Difficult Conversations. Learning to manage conflict is part of navigating tensions around any topic, but especially charged ones related to race and how to bring about change. As a society, we have not handled conflict well and instead people choose sides and dig in their heels. This workshop is less about moving anyone to any side, rather skills are learned to encourage clear communication so people feel heard and a shared reality can be identified. This process also names that this is uncomfortable and learning to sit with discomfort is also part of the process.

The second workshop will be offered on Friday, April 9 from 2pm-3:30pm – Identity. Aisha will use the TED Talk “Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as a catalyst to explore and reflect on times when a single story was had about us and when we had one about others. We will explore how power dynamics impact how we understand each other. There will be opportunities to reflect on how this learning can support the students of Shoreline.

The third workshop will be offered on Friday, April 16th from 2pm-3:30pm – Race and Identity. What the current polarization of the U.S. indicates is that the issues of race and identity and their impacts on both individuals and policy are not understood in the same way by everyone. Having a shared reality on the ways race and identity have shaped, and continues to shape, policy in our country is crucial to not replicating harmful paradigms in systems such as Shoreline Community College.

Vaccination Leave with Pay

Greetings,

As we move through the State’s schedule of COVID-19 vaccination phases, the College continues to look for opportunities to advance appropriate public health policy, remove barriers, and encourage employees to receive the COVID- 19 vaccine. With this in mind, supervisors should work with their staff to support leave to receive the vaccination wherever possible while still meeting required business functions for each area.

In addition, please consider this confirmation that employees are authorized to take a reasonable amount of paid release time within their regular work schedule to travel to and receive each dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. Employees authorized for release time to receive the COVID-19 vaccination shall experience no loss in pay and are not required to use accrued leave for the leave taken. For those reporting leave in TLR, please use Miscellaneous Leave Code “I”, provide a comment indicating “leave for vaccine”, and submit documentation of the vaccination appointment to scchr@shoreline.edu.

This guidance is in effect today forward for any employee eligible to receive their COVID-19 vaccination. Questions regarding the information above can be directed to scchr@shoreline.edu at any time.

Thank you,

Veronica Zura
Executive Director of Human Resources

Support for Working from Home

Good Afternoon All,

At the last several campus updates, anonymous comments have been made by employees who indicate they are not effectively setup to work from home (due to lack of space, internet, etc) and/or who are struggling with other aspects of remote operations. These concerns are taken very seriously, and I am reaching out to the campus to offer my support in problem-solving remote operation needs for any that are continuing to struggle. I can help identify options or troubleshoot issues for a variety of needs and you are encouraged to reach out to me directly at vzura@shoreline.edu or to anyone in HR you are comfortable with for support at any time.

Alternately, you can also still connect with the free and confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offered through the state by phone at (877) 313-4455.

Please feel free to share this information with anyone that may find it useful.

Thank you,

Veronica Zura
Executive Director of Human Resources

How to Request A New Online Form

TSS and Communications & Marketing often receive requests for online forms. Technologies have evolved, so we would like to share the current practices and process.

What kind of forms does TSS create?

We create forms using Formstack, an accessible online form creation tool the college has used for a number of years. We are avoiding creating new Acrobat PDF forms, which are slower to use, less accessible, and harder to make secure.

Can I create my own form?

There are often security issues with form creation, and people who are not full-time form creators may not be aware of all of them. For example, if the form collects certain kinds of private information such as Social Security numbers, it is not safe to have those sent via email. For this reason, we are working to have TSS personnel create all forms. An exception is that an employee who knows how to create Office 365 forms and wants to create a limited-audience, short-term form that won’t involve students or go on the website can do so. They must still make sure they’re not collecting any confidential information.

How do I request that a form be created?

To request a new form, fill out the Form Request located on the TSS intranet site. You can also email tss@shoreline.edu to start the process, and the technician responding to the ticket will share the link above.

How long will it take to get a new form?

Note that TSS form development personnel are heavily involved in a number of projects, including ctcLink, and so there may be delays creating new forms. Forms that support student enrollment and retention or legal compliance will be given highest priority.

Please direct any questions about this to tss@shoreline.edu. Thank you!
