Campus Updates 11/14/24

Events and News

Hello SCC community- I hope you are doing well.  It’s been a busy week here, but productive too.  As many of you know Betsy has been in the office for the past couple weeks while Lori is in Hawaii.  We miss her but we are so glad she is getting time with family!

One event I attended on campus this week was the New Faculty Institute.  It was great having some time with the new faculty, and I enjoyed discussing our strategic plan and the focus we have on reducing equity gaps.  I gave a couple examples of how this work is being done in other spaces and was excited to hear faculty interest for doing this work in their classrooms!

Obviously, we were off for Veterans Day, but I did want to give an additional thank you to all the SCC veterans and family members who have served.  I’d also like to give double thanks to the Veterans Resource Center for celebrating our veterans and creating space for vets to come together and have community.

On Wednesday I attended a Washington Association of Community and Technical College (WACTC) meeting with all the president’s and have a slight OFM update.  As I understand it OFM is intending to have the funding returned from all 34 colleges.  They cannot do this without legislative support, but their interest is for the funding to come back to them.  I’m hoping to have more information to share in the next month.

In related news, please keep on the lookout for a “State of the College” kind of event we are planning to hold where we hope to update the campus on the overall budget forecast for WA state, the State Board, and how we are preparing for potential changes coming with a new presidency- with a particular focus on our mission and values for supporting all of our students including immigrant and undocumented students.    We will be having an initial update at the next College Council meeting (thank you for the suggestion to Tirzah Willaimson!) and will expand and share more data following that meeting.

Finally, thank you to the DEIA office for bringing Pamela Seamonster to campus.  Her storytelling presentation was really wonderful.  I learned a lot and was so excited to have been part of that experience here at Shoreline Community College.  I bet the kiddos at the PCC loved it as well!

Looking forward to next week- be well all.

Cheers,

Jack

Technology Support Services:

Microsoft OneDrive is Shoreline CC’s Official Cloud Storage and Sharing Platform:

We have observed an increase in fraudulent emails impersonating Shoreline CC users encouraging individuals to click on Dropbox “shared files” in attempts to compromise network accounts. TSS would like to remind everyone that Dropbox (or other similar file-sharing platforms) is not approved software for the College and, therefore, should not be used when storing, sharing, or creating documents within the College (please note Google Drive can be used for Academic needs by students).

Please be sure to use Microsoft OneDrive for your cloud file storage and sharing needs. OneDrive is part of our ongoing efforts to streamline operations and maximize the value of and protect our existing resources. This powerful cloud storage and sharing platform is available to all Shoreline users.

Benefits of OneDrive:

  • Built-in Security and Compliance: OneDrive aligns with industry standards to ensure our data is protected.
  • Included in your Shoreline.edu Account: No additional purchase necessary and no additional sign-on required.
  • Seamless Integration with Microsoft 365: OneDrive integrates with the Microsoft 365 suite, which we use daily, allowing easy access to files directly from applications like Word, Excel, and Teams.
  • Collaboration Tools: OneDrive enables real-time co-authoring and easy sharing of documents.
  • Compliance with WA State Retention and Public Records Laws: Using your Shoreline.edu OneDrive account as the only place to store your work-related data and files complies with retention and public records requirements.

OneDrive can also be installed directly on your Shoreline device for automatic file synchronization between your local hard drive and your OneDrive cloud environment. For anyone interested in learning more about Microsoft OneDrive, you can visit Microsoft’s Training Site here, or view the LinkedIn Learning course here.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Network Rewiring and Hardwiring Connection Project Update:

Below is the updated building list of the rewired and hardwired network connections that have been restored and those in progress with expected completion dates. As mentioned at the beginning of this project, most of the building wiring has not been updated for over a decade or more (emphasis on more). During this project, we have already encountered several major issues in the buildings as we run new cabling and test the integrity of previous network connections.  We continue to utilize our third-party vendor (Milne) and expect to be fully completed in early 2025.

Direct Printing to the Ricoh Devices:

As noted in the previous section, TSS has made some significant progress in the Building Rewiring project.  For all computers that have been reconnected on the wired network, you will now have access to print directly to any Ricoh printer across campus. If you have been reconnected to the wired network, you will need to first install the Ricoh Printer software. To do so, please navigate to the Company Portal and search for “Ricoh Printer”, select the printer icon and click “Install”.  Once the software is installed, you will now be able to print directly to the printers from within your application by selecting “Print” and choosing “Ricoh_Copier_Workstations” from the printers listed. For everyone who has yet to be reconnected to the wired network, printing via email will remain available.  If you have any problems or questions on this process, please submit a support ticket here.

Campus eFax System:

TSS is currently in the process of migrating all of the old fax lines to the new eFax system.  At this time we are asking all departments who still use faxing services (sending or receiving) that are not yet on the eFax system to submit a ticket to TSS here.  We are still aware of a few departments that need to be added, however we want to make sure that no one is left out in the process.  We thank you for your attention to this matter.

Foundation:

The Foundation is thrilled to announce we hired Taisa Welhasch as the new Annual Fund and Stewardship Manager. Taisa has strong skills and great experience working with donors. Come by and welcome her next time you are in Bldg. 1000.

We are revamping the scholarship process. During the next month, we will be talking with departments about the scholarships that related to them, how they are funded, reviewed, and awarded. Hopefully, during these conversations we will be able to streamline the process. Our goal is to serve the wishes of the donors who gave so generously as well as help as many students as possible with funding.

Scholarship clinics! We are putting together a couple of workshops to help students complete their scholarship applications and provide guidance on criteria and needs. More information will be rolling out in the next few weeks. If you want a clinic for your area/department, please let Kara Haney in the Foundation office know and she will get you scheduled.

Campus Updates 8/24/23

Events and News

Good afternoon, all!

Once again, I hope you are all doing well. This was another week filled with meetings dedicated to budget planning.

It has been challenging, given our limited resources and the number of requests received. I do think though, that we have developed a process that will honor a collaborative and transparent approach with a focus on prioritization and future planning. We will do even better next year. You may have attended yesterday’s (August 23, 2023) Board of Trustees meeting where we presented the DRAFT budget to the trustees. This, of course, was a “higher level” presentation.

During Opening Week, we will share information with the campus about the specifics (e.g., innovation grant list, etc.) surrounding the College’s 2023-2024 operating budget.

A highlight this week was meeting with my colleague Kunchok Gonpo, the president of the Tibetan Association of Washington (TAW). We are excited that the TAW will be offering language and culture classes to the Tibetan community every Sunday, right here at Shoreline Community College! Thank you to Suzanne Gugger, Assistant Director (Continuing Education, Facility Rentals & Events) for all her work on this! We are also collaborating on other possibilities with the TAW and are planning to connect President Gonpo’s team with campus folks in the fall.

Other than that, not much to report on a personal front. I spent all last weekend on Shoreline CC related work so have less fun stuff to report! I did, however, have a fun ZOOM catch-up with a Community College President friend from California. Always fun to share similarities and differences across colleges. We also managed to talk about non-work- related stuff—which is sometimes a challenge for us.

Hope your weekend is relaxing and energizing as well.

Best,

Jack

Scholarship Reviewers Needed! Reviewing student scholarship applications is inspiring, fulfilling, and rewarding! The review and scoring process happens online and can take place at any time during the review period (August 21 – Sept 6). We will supply you with instructions, scoring rubric, and any other assistance you may need. Each application, scored by 2 or 3 reviewers (depending on the number of volunteers signed up), takes 3 – 5 hours to complete. Please do not feel the need to do them all at one time as you can break it up however you want during the review period.

Events and News

Good afternoon folks,

The focus for this past week has been on planning and organization, as we have roughly one month left in the quarter. We have accomplished a lot this quarter as we work through the ransomware incident to prepare for the summer and fall. Glad to be working with all of you as we rebuild.

In conversations with our Classified Union and the Executive Team, we discussed the pros and cons of being closed on Fridays. What we all agreed on is that we can use our time more productively and efficiently in serving students this summer, rather than being open longer on days which historically have had little traffic.

For example, in discussing serving students in groups rather than individually, Norah Peters suggested a wonderful idea in-line with our strategic discussions this year. In regard to potential Running Start students, she had the idea of creating “Running Start Registration” events in collaboration with teachers and other community members. The intent is to bring students together into one space and provide registration forms, information, as well as possible live testimonials from previous Running Start students, to inspire new registrations. We have models like this at SCC and these are the kinds of ideas we would love to see developed in various units this summer.  These innovative ideas allow us to bring support directly to our communities in addition to being here to serve them. Looking forward to seeing all your creativity this summer!

Speaking of innovation, I had the pleasure of giving the welcome address at the Business and Accounting program’s Discover Your Path in Business event. It was very well attended with lots of eager faces both in person at the PUB as well as on Zoom. I want to thank Irene Ferrante, Leo Novsky, Jessica Custis, Matt Versdahl, and Dan King for working hard to put this event together.

I did get a chance to attend the SIFF opening movie “The Eight Mountains.” It was beautifully made and the event was a lot of fun. It enjoyed meeting some new community members, AND I really love film (so selfishly a win-win for me).  This Friday my wife and I will be in attendance with some colleagues from Seattle- hope to connect with you there!  Plenty to see throughout the weekend as well.

Best,

Jack

EVENTS AND NEWS

As you can imagine, much of this week has been working with folks on the ransomware incident. As was mentioned in the Tuesday forum, we held an update today on the incident and will be sending out a follow-up email to staff, faculty, and students tomorrow. The ransomware incident is something that has taken up a lot of time and mental energy for us all. Thank you again for your understanding as we move through this together.

Another area that I have been busy with this week has been advocacy for our STEAM building. As you can see in the letter below, working with Mary Burroughs, Nancy Dick, Lucas Rucks, Jeffrey Kashiwa, Matt Jorgensen, Christopher Vongvithayamathakul, Douglas Reid, the mighty Lori Yonimitsu, and many others, we were able to get 25 signatures and sent this letter off to our representatives in the House and Senate with hopes of additional advocacy.  We will continue to work with advocates and representatives in hopes of getting our building back on the priority list.  I did hear from Senator Salomon yesterday that he was interested in assisting us, which is very exciting.

Last Thursday Paulette Graham Rainer, our acting director of the Parent Child Center was kind enough to invite Cat Chiappa and I to read to the kids during the “Week of the Young Child.”  When the children were asked if they remembered who the special guest was going to be, one child said, “THE EASTER BUNNY”, another “A DINOSAUR.” I replied, “Tough crowd,” and then delivered a lesson on patience and anticipation by sharing “Waiting is Not Easy” by Mo Willems. We had so much fun, we can’t wait to go back soon!

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of spending some time at an AskMe table and met some new students and faculty. It was great chatting (despite the rain and cold).  I was really glad I was able to have this in my schedule this week.

I also had two great meetings with College Presidents as part of my learning and professional development. I met with Dr Singh from Edmonds and Dr Murray from Cascadia. The Presidents have been really welcoming and supportive and these two are no exception. I am learning a lot through these meetings and look forward to continuing them.

Finally, I did meet with Michael Meotti from WSAC. In case you are unaware, Washington Student Achievement Council is a government agency overseeing higher education in the state of Washington. They do a lot with financial aid and financial aid advocacy, so I wanted to learn more about them and how we work with them just in case there are any future opportunities to support our awesome financial aid team, and of course our students.

Hope you all have a great rest of your week.

Best,

Jack

Campus Updates- All Staff (01/20/22)

Hi Campus Community,

Here are this week’s updates!

RETURN TO CAMPUS/COVID-19

  • Classes: winter 2022 classes continue as planned: in-person, hybrid, and online.
  • Vaccinations:
  • 92% of in-person students have attested to their vaccination status or have claimed an eligible exemption for winter quarter.
  • You now can get Pfizer and Moderna vaccine boosters 5 months (instead of 6 months) after completing the original vaccine series. Children ages 12 and up are now recommended to receive a booster as well.  See CDC statements on Pfizer and on Moderna. Boosters are available at the vaccine clinic in the Quiet Dining Room in the PUB. Walk-ins are welcome if you tell them you are a Shoreline Community College employee.
  • Cases: Executive Team (ET) is closely monitoring the changing conditions of the pandemic, including the number of COVID-19 exposure reports submitted daily by students, staff, and faculty. Reported positive cases remain very low. Here are the numbers since the first day of winter quarter (January 10):
  • Student positive cases: 26, which is 0.5% of total winter students.
  • Employee positive cases: 12, which is 1.7% of total college employees.

While Omicron has a significantly higher transmission rate, it typically is showing to have less severe symptoms in vaccinated individuals than other variants, and for a shorter period of time.

  • Masks:
  • KN-95 masks have been distributed to front-line staff and to faculty who are teaching in-person.
  • Buy from a trusted source. Project N95 vets mask distributors. Armbrust USA, is a company that makes and sells medical-grade masks made in the U.S.A. by various manufacturers.
  • PCC: the Parent Child Center has reopened.
  • Curbside Drop-off/Pick-up: contactless drop-off/pick-up service continues Monday-Wednesday 10am-3 pm in room 2905, but closes permanently on January 27th. Laptop pick-up and return is available through the Library (4000 Building) Monday-Thursday, 8am-5pm.
  • Have questions? Email covidsupervisor@shoreline.edu or call 206-495-7744 during regular College operating hours.
