Campus Updates 6/1/23

Events and News

Good afternoon, folks- hope all are well! Toward the end of last week, I had the chance to greet some of our incoming Dolphins from our area high schools. I did my best to engage but honestly these teens are a tough crowd! 😊 In all seriousness though, it was great to see some new folks coming in for the fall and have an opportunity to brag about Shoreline and the great work that you all do.

This week I have been with some of our amazing folks from International Education at the NAFSA: Association of International Educators conference in Washington DC.  It has been fun meeting new colleagues and seeing all the amazing work that our team (here with me – Samira Pardanani, Yushin Wung, Lisa Maroni and Cynthia Okawara) does to bring the world to Shoreline! The time has been very productive and has given me some good ideas for future collaborations to support our students. It’s also inspiring to meet with people from all over the world who share an educational vision and respect for humanity.

One standout moment for me from this week, was a meeting with representatives from the United Arab Emirates Education center here in Washington DC.  We have about 8 students at our college through this partnership and we met with them to discuss progress, support, and potential future students being placed at Shoreline. I really enjoyed meeting these representatives and discussing our partnership! We are the first Community College in the country to host these government sponsored students.

See you back on campus next week!

Institutional Research (in PIE Planning & Institutional Effectiveness)

New Student Registration for Summer and Fall began May 22, 2023. The first day of summer instruction is July 3, 2023. You can view current and archived Daily Enrollment Reports here: Daily Enrollment Reports (Public):

  • Summer 2023
  • Fall 2023

Caveats: it is still early for Fall enrollment and due to ransomware, we do not have access to past year same-day comparison (even if we did, fraudulent students in Summer/Fall 2022 would make this a bad comparison).

A link to these reports always can be found at the Shoreline Support Center > Employee > Daily Enrollment Report.

Events and News

Greetings Shoreline colleagues I hope you are well. As you know, this week was so hectic that we had a *literal* fire. The response by faculty in the building, our safety and security team, facilities, the SLES team and Shoreline Fire was outstanding. People were quickly evacuated, classes were rescheduled, people resumed work in alternate locations, and folks looked out for each other. This is how we do it people.

This was another great week to connect with community partners. I saw a couple films at SIFF (which was such a fun event!) and got to see some of our colleagues from around campus, as well as spend time with new colleagues including Oscar Rodriguez Garcia from the Cervantes Language Institute, Luis Esteban Consul of Spain, and Juan Fajardo. Thank you to Michelle Cimaroli and the Foundation for doing such a great job. I also had the pleasure to meet colleagues from Home Street Bank who made a kind donation to our Foundation and with representatives of the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center who have a wonderful vision, and a lot of great ideas to connect with SCC!

Finally, I was very glad to attend two excellent events on campus. The first was the Honors Research Track presentations. The students were just outstanding. Their passion for their research projects, and their ability to discuss and convey information is a real testament to them and the faculty who mentor their work. Their posters looked so great as well- a wonderful opportunity for students to get real practice for the poster presentations they will likely do in their grad school careers and beyond. Bravo!

I also attended the AANAPISI heritage month event. The event drew folks from all over and packed the theater. The collaboration with K-12, the city, and the overall community was exactly the kind of event we need to see more of on this campus! The performances were beautiful and moving, and the educational material was excellent. Major kudos to Dr. Joan King and her team for arranging this event. Sadly, I missed the food trucks!

Four dancers dressed in red shirts, and colorful skirts doing a traditional dance.

A great performance from last night’s event!

This Monday is of course Memorial Day, where we recognize and honor our military personnel who lost their lives in service of the United States Armed Forces. On behalf of the college, I want to thank all our Veteran and military affiliated students, staff, and faculty for all you do and for being a part of our community.

Enjoy the rest of your week and the long weekend ahead.

Best,

Jack

As a reminder Juneteenth is coming up next month. Shoreline Community College will honor and recognize Juneteenth, Monday June 19th, 2023, and will continue to recognize this as a holiday going forward. This event will appear on the college calendar and the campus will be closed on this day.

Juneteenth is the one of the oldest known celebrations commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.  President Joe Biden signed the bill ( Pub. L. 117–17 (text) (PDF)) on June 17, 2021, making Juneteenth the eleventh American federal holiday and the first to obtain legal observance as a federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983.

Events and News

Well good evening everyone,

This past week has been really busy but more on the “internal” side of things.  I’ve been in my office in meetings, and doing emails a lot (likely as you have) and looking out my window enjoying the sunshine!  That is definitely something to celebrate.

I wanted to sincerely thank everyone who participated in the Day of Learning this year.  I really felt like we balanced the right tone combining education and fun, delivering some important message along the way. Thank you so much to the team that developed the program and found ways for us to connect in various modalities in very meaningfully ways. Thank you to the funny-sock subcommittee (I’m kidding about the subcommittee 😊), the folks who rolled up their sleeves to work on SMART objectives and learning outcomes, and to those that met in strategic planning sessions.  I know we have a lot of work to do as well as some hurdles to overcome.  We are at a time where we take steps forward, then a bit backward, but always forward again.  As I said in the welcome, we will be making some changes this year that help significantly improve the College, and we will continue to evolve and improve.  I appreciate you all, and all that you do!

Finally, I did have one opportunity for a community connection this week at City Hall.  I have been meeting regularly with the Chief of Police and Greg Cranson to plan projects, but I’m hoping to do so with other city partners, particularly in assisting the City (and SCC) in finding ways to demonstrate the City’s anti-racism resolution, creating tangible results that support students in the community.  We are already doing a lot of this great work through Workforce and other means (and a big thanks To Lauren and her team who were mentioned at the meeting!) but with some more structure and explicit goals, we could see some additional great things happen.

Enjoy your week

Best,

Jack

Events and News

Good afternoon, all, I hope your week has been going well. Post-Ransomware progress is continuing to happen, and we should have some updates on data we are trying to recover by the end of this week/beginning of next, and hope to have an update to share in the forum next week. Keep an eye out for email updates.

This week I was lucky to attend the Academic Team ceremony where community college students from across the state were recognized for their achievements and given scholarships. I was able to meet Siu Hung Yip (Jason) who is 18 yrs. old and is deciding between college acceptances from University of California, Berkeley, UCLA, University of Washington, and is waiting to hear from Princeton University. We had lunch together with Trustee Ringer and colleagues from Green River college. Our second winner Ai Ngamkitcharoenlap was out of the country and missed the event. I hope to meet Ai on campus soon! Governor Jay Inslee did the keynote, and it was very inspiring and supportive of community colleges!

I also was able to attend the WATCC president’s monthly meeting in-person down in Olympia. It was a great meeting, and I made new connections, and received some collegial support from folks (particularly around the ransomware incident).

Last week I forgot to mention that I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of the DECA students at the Small Business Center opening. You may have heard about their recent trip to complete in Orlando. The students were so great to chat with, and their enthusiasm for entrepreneurship was contagious. Keep up the good work Professor Novsky!

Finally, I was able to attend the “900 days of siege” event in recognition of Holocaust Awareness Day. Mrs. Rita Davidova was so courageous in sharing her story, educating us about the 900-day siege of Leningrad. She was five years old at the time but has many vivid memories, some she had never shared before. Our community partner Rabbi Sadya Davidoff (who brought the event to us) gave flowers to all the organizers (Suzanne make sure you get yours!!) as a thank you, and raved about how warm and welcoming our security and planning team are. I couldn’t agree more!

Best,

Jack

Campus Updates 4/21/23

Good morning, folks—this one will be a short intro on my end.

Ransomware and our recovery project are of course the bulk of everyone’s work these days. It’s great to see Wi-Fi coming back online, and lots of other campus improvements as well. We are still waiting for info from DELL on their recovery efforts but will report that as soon as we have it. Of course, again big thanks to TSS who have moved us along in the recovery process much faster than what I have heard from other institutions in similar situations.

While busy this week, I was able to make some events and community connections that I think will both assist the college as we move forward, and that also highlight the great work already happening here. Tenzin Tsundue was on campus last week reading from his new book “Nowhere to Call Home.” The presentation included a bit of Tibetan history, beautiful poetry, and inspiring words and camaraderie. Thank you so much to Dr. King, and team for hosting this wonderful speaker.

On Sunday, Samira Pardanani and I met with members of the Nepal Seattle Society. We are so pleased language and culture classes are offered on our campus, and look forward to future partnerships aiming to preserve culture for our Nepalese community

Finally, I had the opportunity to meet with the North Urban Human Services Alliance. I learned a bit about their vision, and what they offer to the community. We discussed the importance of their work on areas of retention for our students, and ways we might work together in the future. I will be bringing some folks together to discuss possibilities with them so if that’s your area of interest please let us know.

In other news, I was thinking the other day that sadly I have not advanced my personal gardening projects here at all. I am wondering how folks are doing on theirs and what April crops look like so far? Let me know!

Have a great weekend!

Best,

Jack
